THE POWER TO THINK BEYOND
Our life is defined by the choices that we make each day. Some are small, whether to have tea or coffee, whereas some are more important or critical: closing a deal worth millions. The latter ones are of great importance which shape our future and signify our growth or fall. The decisions we make affect various aspects of our lives- career, relationships, health, personality, etc. They map out the consequences of our actions, ultimately shaping our destiny.
Certain choices are extremely crucial; so what is the thought process that goes on in our mind? How would we know if our assumptions are accurate? How critically, do we think???...
Critical thinking is the analysis of facts to form a judgment. -Edward M. Glaser
We must move beyond simply accepting or rejecting, agreeing or disagreeing with the perspective or information that we find; understanding should be our first priority. Critical thinking is a way of thinking about whatever is presently occupying our mind so that we come to the best possible conclusion.
The more self-aware we are, the more knowledge we have related to the situation- the better the decision we take.
I would like to highlight a framework towards our critical thinking approach (based on Benjamin Bloom Taxonomy).
This pertains to knowing what the situation is about. Gathering basic information, facts. We need to first identify the questions that we actually need to take the decision.
We need to be aware why this thought process is important. Why do we either agree or disagree? Start thinking and asking, because this is what allows us to become critical & strategic in our thinking. Prefer objectivity & leave no room for subjectivity.
We should look for that we can’t see, because having the big picture will help us get a better clarity to make our decision. Short-sightedness never helps in taking correct decisions.
Analyzing & understanding the idea/thought process in the best way for us to make our decision. How will our decision justify the purpose? We need to ensure that the path we are on is leading us to our goal.
Ask yourself, how will we execute the decision? It is not enough to know what we need to do but also how we need to do something. Once we know how we are going to apply it, we become more aware.
6. New perspectives
Let us ask ourselves: ‘If I execute this decision, what new perspectives might I learn?’ Remember everyone has their own point of view. But in order to broaden one’s perspective, taking decisions is important. Only time can tell how they turn out. That should not prevent us from taking a decision.
Finally, we need to assemble all thoughts and ideas from above concepts to formulate our decision. There are a lot of factors that need to be considered for the decision, the important thing is to ensure we have given enough thought to them and planned adequately.
There are a lot of ways one can go about taking a decision. But for critical life decisions, it is important to be objective and to follow a process. Otherwise we might end up making random decisions which do not add value to our life.
As our ability to think critically grows, we will be able to not only take better decisions but execute them well. Most people take emotional decisions, but to stand out and succeed we need to take smart decisions.
