Setting effective goals

HOW TO SET GOALS AS EXPLAINED BY TONY ROBBINS, THE WORLD’S BEST SUCCESS COACH

Tony Robbins has authored numerous best-selling books. He manages numerous businesses that clock billions of dollars in annual sales. He is justifiably considered to be one of the greatest motivational speakers of our time. Here are some tips from him on how to set effective goals:

1. The pursuit is as important as the goal

According to Tony, the purpose of a goal is not to “get it”. The purpose of a goal is “who we become in pursuit of it”. Success is growing in pursuit of a goal. So let’s say we decide to earn 1 million per annum. That’s a great way to start. However, it’s the joy of pursuing the money that is real success. To get it, we take courses, work harder, show up to work on time and network like crazy. That’s when real growth happens. The money is bound to follow anyways.

2. Goal setting needs to be in context

Too many times, we start out with big goals that are unachievable. For example, we often start by saying: I’m going to lose 10 kilograms of weight this month. This is extremely difficult for most people and ends up demotivating us when we realize it’s not going to happen. We need to understand that achieving a goal is a process that takes time and discipline and effort. Mostly, we overestimate what can be done in the short-run but underestimate what can be done in the long-run. We never know how far the initial steps could take us, so it’s important to start with some perspective.

3. Getting the goal doesn’t mean it’s over

The world’s most successful people set new goals for themselves regularly. After they’ve built one business and completed their goals, they don’t sit down and say: “I’m done”. They take a break, and set their minds to the next challenge. That’s why businesspeople create new businesses and the movie stars create better movies and atheltes create new records . Accepting and accomplishing challenges becomes part of their DNA.

So let’s set and achieve our goals, and in the process, become who we truly want to.
