HOW TO HAVE A DIET THAT SUSTAINS OUR MEDITATION PRACTICE

Eating healthy food is one of the biggest foundations of good health. With a lot of information available to us these days, the subject has become a little complicated. There is no need however for complicated diet charts. Today we will talk about nutrition and how meditation affects it. Let us keep it simple so that we can execute easily. A good diet can also be very helpful in achieving a state of calm in the mind.

Firstly, we don’t need to ‘go on a diet’. We need to have a good diet, period. We need to stick to a diet that fulfills all our nutritional requirements and also includes our personal preferences. Occasionally eating unhealthy food is acceptable but we surely do not want to eat junk food on a regular basis.

What would a healthy diet look like? A healthy diet should include three categories of foods:

1. Grains
2. Seeds and nuts
3. Fruits and vegetables

We also need to include special foods like milk, honey, curd, buttermilk, etc. We have to avoid processed food and eat as fresh as possible.

The timing of our meals is also very important. Ideally, it is good to eat a light breakfast in the morning and a light dinner in the evening. Lunch has to be our main meal. Our digestion is strongest at noon. We can include fruits, fruit juices or vegetable juices as mid-morning and early evening snacks. That is all there is to it. Simple.

It will not be very hard for us to follow this diet if we are meditating regularly. Meditation will help us to change our diet preferences naturally without us having to force any diet on ourselves. We will naturally seek light and nutritious food. In fact, meditation helps us overcome the artificial craving for junk food created by advertisements and social media.

Saying that “we are, what we eat” is perhaps too extreme. Clearly, there is a distinction between what we eat and who we are. But what we eat can have a significant impact on our health. And we need our health to enjoy our journey of transformation. We need our health and longevity to find out who we are!
