Making the best out of mistakes

IF THE JAR IS BROKEN, YOU CAN STILL ENJOY THE COOKIES

The story:

We all know that once a glass is broken, it always remains like that. We cry and get hurt after that happens. And then we swear that we won’t pick up any items that are made of glass. This story is a bit different from what we all heard; it all depends on our perspective to see things as they are.

It was 3 pm in the afternoon and Shia was really hungry. She thought she would go into the kitchen and find something to eat. She saw a cookie jar kept near the fridge and thought she could eat some. Now, the cookie jar was at a height and she found it hard to reach. Yet, she tried and finally she got hold of it and while opening it, she mistakenly dropped the jar and all the cookies fell down, breaking the glass jar! Shia’s mother, on hearing the noise, ran into the kitchen to find Shia standing with her head down. Shia thought she would probably get a beating. But what her mother did next came as a surprise to her! Instead of yelling, her mother gave her cookies from another jar and gave her a pat on her back.

The lesson:

Since we know the damage is already done, and there’s nothing we can do now, so don’t we enjoy a few cookies? But what Shia’s mother told next is the real lesson that we all need to learn. After a few minutes, her mother said, ‘You know, Shia, whenever you make a mess like this, it’s your duty eventually to clean it all up and restore everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do it? We could use a broom, or pick it by a towel and a mop? Which one would you prefer?’

Shia chose the broom and helped her mother cleaned the mess. It looked clean after a while. Then, her mother said, ‘what we have here is a failed experiment in how do you catch and open a cookie jar. Let us try doing it once again and see if we can open the jar.’ Shia learned that if she kept the jar on the ground, in between her legs and tried to twist it, it would open faster. What a wonderful lesson she learned that day!

What did we learn?

a) We should not be afraid to make mistakes.
b) Mistakes are just opportunities for learning something new, which is what makes us stronger and helps us learn something valuable each time!

Every memorable act in the history of the world is a triumph of enthusiasm. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Enthusiasm gives any challenge or any occupation, no matter how frightening or difficult, a new meaning. Without enthusiasm you are doomed to a life of mediocrity but with it, you can accomplish miracles.
