START PURSUING YOUR DREAMS, TODAY, RIGHT NOW
When people say ‘life is short’, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to live an ordinary life. No matter how old you get, you must approach each venture as if you’re just getting started. It’s rightly said by intellectuals that ‘it’s better late than never’.
Whether you are 65 or 15, you should never stop pursuing your dream, doing something you love or being with someone that makes you happy.
It’s never too late to...
Our dreams are a representation of who we are and what we consider to be important to us. Pursuing something that is challenging will cause us to grow into the person we need to become to achieve our dreams. We’ll tap into resources within us we never knew we had, while developing more of our true potential.
The more we grow, the more confidence we’ll gain, which will inspire us to pursue bigger and bigger dreams. One of the most rewarding things for us is to have someone say they were inspired by us in some way, whether that’s to pursue a dream they had or become a better person.
By having the courage to pursue our dreams, we show others what’s possible. Here are things to keep in mind when pursuing dreams:
• Build a picture of what your dream is.
• Visualise it so it’s ingrained in you.
• Develop a plan to make it a reality.
• Take the first step you can or know.
• Ask for support and share your dream with someone else.
• Review your progress regularly and make adjustments as required.
• Celebrate any milestones achieved along the way.
Winston Churchill once said, ‘Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.’
While some people are fooled into believing that every act of courage is a risk, that isn’t the case. It may feel like it’s a risk because you battle fear during the attempt to put your courage into action. But every action stems from fear.
Being courageous isn’t about rushing in blindly. It’s about thinking things through and acting despite the fear that sets in. You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along. Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.
Once you are willing to risk the emotional pain of making mistakes, you will shed more fear than you ever imagined.
Know that making mistakes will help you obtain information and skills you can use to create the correct behaviours, and that everyone who has ever done something great has failed more than once. Whenever you feel fear, try to feel grateful instead.
If you’ve always struggled with self-love and acceptance or if your changing life and appearance has been harder on you than you imagined, you may feel quite the opposite. Perhaps you’ve never felt true love for yourself or you’re looking for ways to find it again. Either way, it is possible to learn to love yourself no matter how old you are.
Before you can love yourself though, you have to know who you are. Have you ever taken a good, long, soulful and subjective look at who you are as a person?
Once you figure out who you are, invest some of your resources in fostering and nurturing your best characteristics, qualities, skills and talents. Don’t waste time on the things you don’t personally enjoy or that you have no desire to get better at or do more of regardless of what anyone else tells you. Accept your interests and talents and pursue them. Soon you will begin to love the uniqueness of them and the joy they bring you. Find ways to provide a healthy challenge to your current understanding of life, and you will discover and experience far more of life’s magic in the days ahead.
• Learn to empathize with and root for yourself
• Give yourself the space to feel your emotions
• Practice self-care
• Set boundaries for yourself
Yes, criticisms are a part and parcel of life but those critical reviews shouldn’t stop you from doing something that you love or hold you back from achieving what you want to do in your life. Never tell yourself it’s too late. Start telling yourself that if there is any right time then it’s now.
Don’t sell yourself short and let your self-doubt get in the way of you achieving everything that you fear you aren’t good enough to accomplish. No matter what your age is, as long as you are breathing, it’s never too late to start something new, accomplish your goals and amaze the world with your strength, with the way you shed your inhibitions and take on the world as something you want to conquer.
You have all the strength you will ever need; you’ve had it all along. I believe in you, the world believes in you. Start by doing something you love, with baby steps, and you can take on the whole world.
You’ve got this!
