What is inner peace?

Inner peace refers to a state of being mentally calm and content, with enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself strong in the face of adversity or stress.

If inner peace seems elusive and unattainable, far away or unreal, you aren’t alone. Most people feel that way at one time or another. A big part of your self-development can be to learn how to achieve inner peace.

It’s a skill that will help you throughout your life. You will be calm during times of stress and during situations that need your immediate attention.

One thing you must always remember to achieve inner peace is to recognize- that it’s an internal job, regardless of the circumstances outside.

Ideas to achieve inner peace

1. Simplify

Keeping your life simple will contribute to your inner peace because it directs your energy to a single point. Toss out everything that holds you back. That includes toxic friends, relationships, or even acquaintances who drain you mentally and in return give you nothing. Remember it’s always quality over quantity. Keep it simple and stay focused.

2. Be in the present

The only time that really matters is present and it is the only time that really exists. The past was, and you have no control over the future. When you live in the “here and now”, you allow yourself to enjoy the present completely and you don’t waste time ruminating or anticipating the future.

So focus on what you do and have control over. Give it your best and live.

3. Express your gratitude

Take a minute to recognize just how fortunate you are. Your mind may have a tendency to wander and compare. But consider this, more than 60% of the world lives on less than 10$ a day. Where do you fit into this? Chances are, that in comparison, you are living like a king or queen. Be grateful for what you have. Every morning and at the end of the day, count at least two things you are grateful for.

4. Gain a new perspective

Try someone else’s point of view. Your point of view isn’t always the only one; don’t treat it like a law. Be ready to let it go. Don’t go to battle over your point of view, for the reality is that, it is no more than your opinion.

And, if you find yourself to be in the wrong, be gracious to acknowledge that- it will take away a lot of stress from your mind, and make you peaceful.

5. This too shall pass

Everything that comes will pass sooner or later. Time is generous and indifferent. What is dark today may be glorious tomorrow. Nothing is forever, not your happiness or your pain.

Time will heal the deepest wounds. Since whatever is going on today, will pass, sometimes the best solution is simply to let go. Tomorrow is another day – a fresh start.

6. Smile

Smile – it can do wonders for your spirit and for the spirit of others. It can soften our hearts and change moods. Smiling is connected to love and peace; you can’t smile and be angry or jealous at the same time. Smiling makes you feel calm, happy, and loved.

7. Accept and let it go

Now is now. But if something negative from the past – someone said something, someone did something – is still on your mind then accept and let that feeling and thought in, instead of trying to push it away.

When you accept it, that it when it starts to lose power. And while the facts may still be there in your head the negative feelings become a lot less powerful.

At this point, let that thing go like you are throwing out a bag of old clothes. Direct your focus to the present moment and something better instead.

8. Teach your mind to become still

A turbulent mind cannot be at peace. We need to teach our mind to move from turbulence to tranquillity. The way we do that is through the practice of meditation.

You can begin to meditate by closing your eyes and focusing on your breath. Then, treat any thoughts that try to take your attention away from your breath like clouds passing away. If you start to think of something that makes you angry or anxious, do the following:

♣ Don’t try to push the thought away.
♣ At the same time, don’t place your attention on it.

Start with 2-5 minutes of practice every day and then you can increase it.
