FOMO - Dependence on technology - Part 2

HOW CAN WE FREE OURSELVES FROM THE ALL-POWERFUL FOMO ?

In the previous article, we learned about dependency and the fear of missing out (FOMO). We face so many problems but we are still hooked to social media and technology. FOMO certainly deteriorates our mental and physical health and spoils our relationships and destroys our self-awareness. Can we take a step back try to change this?

We all know that changing a habit takes time, but if we are not able to invest time and efforts in making our own life a little bit better, then what’s the use of anything that we do, be it our job or money or parties? It all becomes useless. We need to always remember, the only person one can change is one’s own self, so let’s always try to do ourselves one better than what we did before. Let’s always be kind to ourselves.

What can one do to reduce technology dependency?

1. Exercise: Exercise has been proven to not only improve physical but also mental health. It is not necessary that we have to wake up early in the morning to stretch our legs. We can do it at our own time and in our own space. But we need to exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes. If exercise is not feasible, then one can start playing a sport or take brisk walks in natural surroundings.

2. Develop a hobby: Everyone can have at least one hobby; it’s just that sometimes we just don’t know which one is more suitable for us. We haven’t explored ourselves to our fullest to find out things that we really like doing. We can always try and explore new things. If we don’t have a hobby, we can explore and find one that we love. Once we do have something that we truly enjoy, the chances of being affected by what other people say or do reduce drastically.

3. Meditate: Meditation can be a great tool to bring about a change in our lives. We can start by meditating everyday for 5-20 minutes. Then as our mind start adapting to the practice, we can slowly increase our time. We will be able to concentrate more and stay focused, which helps immensely in reducing FOMO.

4. Follow a schedule: Maintaining daily plans will help us in understanding where does most of our time go (it always seems to fly by, doesn’t it?) and where do we spend the least amount of time. It’s difficult, but recommended to include all activities that we do from the moment we wake up to when we’re asleep in the night. It also helps us gain an insight into how productive we really are (it’s really scary at first) so we can make the most of our time. When we have an awareness of how our time is being utilized, we won’t get into an activity just for the heck of it or because someone else is doing it.

These are just four ways which help us in reducing our wastage of time and getting stressed over social media for no reason. We can always try out new and different ways like may be go on a trek, hang out with friends, etc.

We can try and maintain a schedule for a week and see the difference in our activities. Our addiction towards technology or any other type of addiction will be reduced. We will feel less stressed and be able to pay more attention to ourselves and give our time to our loved ones.

It will take time but it will be worth it in the end.

Hey the suggestion to have a hobby is really good. When we don't have a hobby, we tend to be unhappy, which leads to looking at what others are up to and getting caught up in FOMO 😀
