A hobby is a regular activity done in one's leisure time for pleasure. It can include collecting specific objects like stamps, artistic pursuits like painting, playing sports and others.

The world is full of wonderful, exciting activities that we can explore and adopt as our own. Of course, all of us are unique and, therefore, our interests vary. But once we discover a hobby that we truly enjoy and are passionate about, we become hooked. It becomes a part of our lives and captivates us. It leads to overall well-being and helps us grow as a person.

There are many reasons why all of us should have at least one hobby that we truly cherish, but here are the main advantages:

1. Develop a more complete personality

What do most of us do for the bulk of our time? We work or study, eat, sleep and hang out with friends/family. Each of these activities has its own importance. However, what are we doing only for ourselves? What do we do for something not for career or money, but for our own fulfilment?

By indulging ourselves in an activity like painting or playing soccer, we shape ourselves into more complete human beings. We manage our schedule to spend time on something that we deeply care about, despite nobody forcing us to do so. In the process, we learn something new and get better at it with regular practice.

2. Relieve stress

It helps to alleviate stress by keeping us engaged in something you enjoy doing. Hobbies grant us a way to take our mind off the stresses of everyday life. They help us to relax and seek pleasure in activities that aren’t related to any work and hence are free of any pressure. That just calms the mind and makes us happy. Hobbies bring a sense of fun and freedom to life that can help to minimize the impact of chronic stress. Hobbies that include physical activities even catalyze chemical changes in the body that help to reduce stress.

Also, spending time on a hobby during work breaks can help accelerate the creative process and give us ideas that may even be applicable in work.

3. Build patience naturally

Hobbies help us become more patient. In order to develop a new hobby, we have to learn how to do something that is completely new to us, and we will need to be patient in order to build our skills. For instance, when we are trying to learn how to design, we have to try dozens and maybe even hundreds of colour combinations before things begin to look amazing, but the process takes time and a LOT of attempts.

4. Create a great social life

Having a hobby can help our social life and build a bond with others. A hobby is something that we can frequently enjoy with other people. Whether you join a club or play in a sports league, a hobby is a great way to meet and get closer to people who have the same interests as we do.

People who have a passion tend to naturally attract other people around them as they always have something new to share and new ideas to discuss.

5. Build genuine confidence

It feels great to be skilled and good at something, doesn’t it? It increases our confidence and self-esteem. Any activity that we can do really well is an opportunity to build confidence and develop satisfaction in our accomplishments. We feel great when we have a unique skill that we have perfected over time.

6. Eradicate boredom

Too many times, we are left with free time that takes us to time-killing activities like binge watching TV or playing computer games. Hobbies can save us from these. They give us something to do when we find ourselves with nothing to fill the time. They also give us an activity that we can look forward to and get excited about during the last college lecture or while driving back from office.

8. Acquire skills

A hobby helps us develop new skills. A hobby that we really dedicate our time to, will lead us to build new skills. It stimulates creativity and free thinking. Creativity is very important in life, it helps us in doing even basic tasks in unique ways. Remember the saying: ‘Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently.’ Creative pursuits have also been known to boost our cognitive function and brain efficiency.

Hobbies enrich our life and equip us with a different perspective to look at things. No matter what type of hobby we choose, we will definitely be exposed to new ideas. Hobbies enable us to grow in several ways, including exposing us to new opinions and to new ways to look at life.

When pursued vigorously, hobbies can also challenge us. When we pick a new hobby, we will be involved in activities that are completely unknown to us. The process of overcoming the hurdles and temporary frustration when learning something new is something that all of us need to go through.

The good news is that most of us have a lot more time in store during this lockdown period, to develop a new hobby or to embrace old ones. Let’s get our old painting books open or take out our guitar or read. Whatever makes us happy.
