5 IMPORTANT LESSONS TO MAKE OUR LIVES HAPPIER
It is an important day of Gautama Buddha's life as three major events in the life of Gautam Buddha took place on this day.
Firstly, the Buddha-to-be, Prince Siddhartha was born at Lumbini Grove on the full moon day in May. Secondly, after six years of hardship, he attained enlightenment under the shade of the Bodhi tree and became Gautama Buddha at Bodh Gaya also on the full moon day of May. Thirdly, after 45 years of teaching the Truth, when he was eighty, at Kusinara, he passed away to Nibbana (Nirvana), the cessation of all desire, on the full moon day of May.
The Buddha was a philosopher, spiritual teacher, religious leader as well as an awakened being.
On this day, we list some of Buddha’s preachings and some lessons from his life to use in our daily lives:
1. It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you.
Winning over our own struggles makes us internally strong thereby making our lives smooth and easy-going. We might not be able to change the people around us, but we can certainly change ourselves. It is our reaction and attitude that determines our life.
2. The trouble is, you think you have time.
The quote resonates with so many of us because this concept of time is so skewed in our minds. We often don't realise how quickly time passes. Time is a precious resource that cannot be bought or sold so we need to utilise it wisely.
Every moment counts. One can recover lost wealth in life, but one can never recover lost time. So we must realize that each day, each moment is to be used wisely.
3. Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
The Buddha never asked anyone for blind devotion. If we do not believe our own instincts we end up in trusting what others say, we see the situation from other's eyes which obviously must not be correct as we all have different opinions and every situation is unique. In the end, it is our own internal conscience and intellect that must guide us.
4. Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.
These 3 attributes make us a complete person and serve the purpose of life. Today, the world around us is riddled with conflict and hatred. We are consumed by the toxic nature of media and politics.
The purpose of life cannot be just to earn money, eat and survive. We also need to care for our fellow human beings. As human beings, we can have compassion for our fellow beings and take care of others around us.
5. We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
It is so important to maintain positive thoughts because thoughts become our words, words become our behaviour, behaviour becomes our habit, habits become our values and values become our destiny.
It is rightly said that the quality of our life is determined by the quality of our thoughts.
We all are acquainted with the above quotes, what we have to do is to practice them in day to day life which will not only bring prosperity but also strengthen our mind to be able to see possibilities in even odd circumstances. On this Buddha Purnima, we wish you the very best in life and pray for your happiness, health and success.
Stay home, stay safe, stay happy. Thanks!
