7 golden steps to be organized

I totally agree, getting things done on time or getting things organised can be tough at times especially when you don't have a very disciplined routine. But getting your stuff organised has its own benefits. Before we get into learning how to be more organised, its important to know why do we need to get organised.

Why do we need to get organised?

A clear mind: Have you heard the phrase, ‘A clean place makes a happy space?’ Well, this phrase indicates the power of organisation. When you start tidying up, you might start to notice that it clears up your mind. Your flow of thoughts has more clarity and you automatically feel motivated.

Productivity: It increases chances of productivity. By being organised, you will have more time to work on important tasks.

Reduces stress level: Do you have a hard time in locating something which you don't know where you kept? Organisation can surely help reduce your stress level here. If things are kept neatly and labelled, then finding them out would never be a problem!

Punctuality: You can definitely ‘be on time’once you consider noting important dates and calendar alerts which would help you ensure not to lose track of time.

Sense of control: Do you feel that your life is out of control at times? Does this seem to demotivate you or lower your self-esteem? Clearing your clutter can help you gain a sense of control over your life which in turn would increase your self-esteem and motivation.

Now that we know the benefits of being organise, how do we go about it? Here are some steps which can help you become more organised in life:

1. Make to-do lists

The best way to start getting organised is to make a to-do list. Making a to-do list would help you sort out the important tasks and differentiate them from the less important ones. Try to keep your to-do lists short but efficient. I would recommend you to limit your list to 5 tasks or fewer. Once you start scratching off the tasks you completed in the list; the feeling of accomplishment would increase your motivation. Making a list would see to it that you don't forget your tasks. When you see the list everyday, it will nag you to complete all your tasks on time.

2. Keep everything at its own place

Difficulty in finding certain things? Here's what you can do to change it. We all have certain places assigned for a variety of things. For example- a place for keeping vessels, a place for keeping books, a place for keeping clothes, etc. But ask yourself, after using one thing do you put it back at its original place? Most of us don't do that. So next time, whenever you use something, take the time to put it back where you found it. This would ensure your home to be organised as well as it won't be difficult for you the next time to find something.

It’s far more difficult, time-consuming and stressful to find something that’s lost compared to just keeping things in their designated place.

3. Use a calendar

I cannot emphasise enough on this. A calendar is like a best friend to an organised person. You can either use it on your phone or have a desk calendar, whatever works for you. Start noting important dates and tasks on the calendar. Don't rely on your memory when it comes to deadlines or due dates. Immediately add those dates and tasks to your calendar. Also, remember to keep the calendar where you can easily access it or see it. Always keep it somewhere near you or someplace where you often walk by or sit.

4. Create a morning and night-time rituals

Here comes one of the toughest parts in becoming more organised. A lot of us have difficulties in sleeping on time and waking up on time. Stick to sleeping on the same time and waking up on the same time everyday. It’s difficult, but the benefits are incredible. Once you do that, create rituals for the starting and ending of your days. For example- you can wake up early and get in some yoga or exercise or you might just want to sip on some tea/coffee and read the newspaper. Basically this would be a time where you can relax and simultaneously get energised to handle a busy day ahead of you. As bedtime approaches, you might want to have a relaxing shower, read a book, sip on some green tea or even get in some skincare! Gradually you will start associating these habits with sleep, energy and relaxation.

5. Throw or give away whats unnecessary

We all have those things for which have no use, yet we never throw or give them away. It can be things like our old toys, teddy bears, books, etc. I totally agree that we all have our memories attached to those things. It’s not wrong to keep those things, but if it takes up your space and creates a mess, then you might want to think about it. Its completely alright if you don't want to throw or give away everything but at least you can start with something. If your stuff is in good condition, you can even think of giving it to an orphanage or to someone who needs it. If they're not in a good condition, you might just want to throw it out. This would help you in managing your space in a wise manner.

6. Delegate tasks if needed

It's very easy to get overwhelmed when you have a lot of tasks on your head. Here is where delegation comes to your rescue. Try to figure out those tasks which you can delegate to others.

For example, you can divide chores at home between family members or you can divide certain tasks with your co-workers or your team. This would lessen the burden of completing the tasks and help you do them in a more efficient way.

7. Organise your space

This space can be your home or even your workspace. This space has a direct effect on your mind, mood and thoughts. An untidy space would lead to negativity or frustration while a tidy place would lead to positivity and happiness. Start with doing small things like putting the extra files in respective cabinets, using a pen holder to carry pencils/pens or folding your clothes and putting them into the cupboard.

Organized people are not born with these skills. They cultivate habits which help them stay organized. Remember that all people have 24 hours in a day, but only some people make the most of it.

It’s easy to do a lot of work for a few days here and there, but to ensure that you keep happy, healthy and productive over a long period of time or even a lifetime, it’s necessary to be organized.
